The Rose & Crown, Tintern - What's New?

image link to close detail window

If you can get out in these difficult times, the comfort and companionship of the local pub may be just the thing to keep your spirits up. The Rose and Crown, Tintern will be staying open as long as possible during the current health crisis, serving food and drinks as usual.

If the order comes to close, we will have to, but until then it's business as usual. Naturally we want everyone to keep healthy so normal consideration for others is key, so please follow advice to self-isolate if you have visited or been in touch with someone from a high risk area.

Even if you are self-isolated, you don't have to miss out on good food. While the current situation exists, we will be making selected items from our menu available for take-away orders. Call us for details.

Meanwhile, stay healthy, stay safe and we will look forward to seeing all our locals and visitors when normality is restored.

Well, there's always the Ardman Animations modelling workshop at the Blake Theatre in Monmmouth tomorrow.

There are three, one hour sessions starting at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, and all children under 11 have to be accompanied by an adult.

So, how about popping in to the Rose & Crown for some Cracking Grub on the way home? Bring some plasticine so that the young (and maybe not so young) Wallis and Gromit fans can demonstrate their newly honed skills after lunch while you relax with a drink from our great selection of local beers and ciders.

Some recent work to put the old stable at the Rose & Crown to better use, revealed this lovely old stone floor, thought to date back to the 17th century.

With a quick brush up it will make a great feature for the pub's shed and log store. The building is fascinating in so many respects, having been here for a long time and has evolved through many phases.

Not only is it an interesting building in a beautiful location, you will also find a very warm welcome, a fine selection of ales, ciders and non alcoholic drinks along with what many have described as the best steaks in the Wye Valley.

Jason is off on a fishing trip from Plymouth this week and that means different things to different people. To Jason it means a day doing the thing he loves most of all. To the rest of us, it means that there will be a fantastic selection of fresh fish on the menu from Monday onwards.

Jason always brings home a good bag of cod, ling, whiting and pollack, all of which make it onto the menu in their own right. If we are really lucky, a conger eel or a shark is also in the box of goodies that come back to the Rose & Crown. The pan fried conger steaks are just out of this world. Try the fisherman's pie too if you really feel like a treat, and the battered cod bites with swet chilli sauce are so popular, you have to get your order in quickly.

For the best fresh fish selection in the Wye Valley, get along to the Rose & Crown just after one of Jason's fishing trips and you will be delighted.

As with the Edinburgh Festival, the best entertainment is so often found at the Fringe. So it was this year with the Rose and Crown playing host to many of the musicians appearing at Tintern's Folk on the Lawn festival this year.

Informally dubbed 'The Fringe of the Lawn', for three nights the Roase & Crown bar was transformed into an impromptu folk venue, with artists from all over the UK taking it in turns to share songs of their home.

Wikka Bones made a huge impact with the locals by performing every night with songs ranging from their own new compositions to standard Irish folk classics that got the whole place dancing and singing along.

The Fringe of the Lawn has been gathering momentum for a few years now, and is definitely one of the attractions of the weekend. For a great time, great food and great beer to go along with the music, book into one of our rooms for next year's event and make sure of your place at the bar.

If you are visiting the Wye Valley, you will find stunning views wherever you go. The outside seating area of the Rose & Crown, Tintern is no exception. Overlooking the river, you can eat and drink while taking in the views, if you are lucky, our local otters or perhaps even a seal will put in an appearance.

Hills, fields and vineyards surround our pub, and you can see the old railway bridge that used to carry the products from Tintern's iron works back in the days of steam.

The next thing downriver from there is Tintern Abbey, a world famous ruin from the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. Everywhere around here you will find history, from civil war sites to shipbuilding levees.

It is not hard to see why this is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Come and look for yourself. Better still, stay a while, sit overlooking the river and enjoy local beer and food with great service and a great welcome.

The idea is that by using a simple touch-screen navigation menu, visitors to the Wye Valley can find places of interest, activities and, of course, places to eat, drink and stay, such as the Rose & Crown for example.

Anglers are always welcome at the Rose & Crown. Fishing is Jason's great passion but he doesn't get as much time to do it as he would like. Well, busy pubs don't give you much time for anything other than work, so he is here in the bar, cellar or kitchen. However, in his mind he is fishing, so has added some angling decorations to the back bar in the shape of antique fishing tackle and pictures, including this one of a massive catfish he landed in France.

These days, when Jason does get out fishing, it is usually at sea off Plymouth so that whatever he catches can go on the menu, giving the Rose & Crown, the best selection of absolutely fresh fish dishes in the Wye Valley.

If you like to catch fish, talk about fish or eat fish, then the Rose & Crown, Tintern is well worth a visit.

Saturday night saw us celebrate the birthdays of Jason and resident old git Neil in great style. The band Jester played a fine set and there was a lot of so-called dancing going on. The disappointment of Wales losing to Ireland was soon forgotten, washed away on a tide of beer and good food. The Irish contingent of two had a lot to celebrate as well. Cake was consumed and a good time was had by all.

During the evening, yards of ale were attempted by Chris Luff, Muingo Prentice and Jason, with Jason's yard disappearing in a very short space of time to prove himself the undisputed champion of this formidable event.

The accommodation rooms were all full and everyone waved a fond farewell to Tintern after a hearty breakfast on Sunday morning. The Rose & Crown is a great place to celebrate, so if you have a special event coming up, give us a call on the number shown above or click in the header of any page to send us an email and give your family and friends a night to remember.

More high tides on their way! On Saturday February 1st, more high tides are expected to affect Tintern. The last high tide caused the River Wye to burst its banks and come across the Monmouth Road into the bar. This drew quite a crowd to gather for the half an hour or so of the flood. How about making a morning of it and meet up with friends in the bar of the Rose & Crown for a grandstand view and a great Floodwatch Full English Breakfast? It may be cold outside but you will always find a warm welcome at the Rose & Crown.

During the last flood, a video was posted on YouTube by Joanna Goodwin. This has now had over 12,000 views. The coming high tide could make it your turn to become an internationally known videographer by shooting your own movie from the pub. Make the most of the grandstand view of the area that the Rose & Crown gives you for viewing, photography and video.

The high tide is expected at just before 9 am but call us on 01292 689254 for up to date estimate of time and to book your place to watch the forces of nature at work. You can also click in the header of any page to send us an email. Booking early is advised as we are expecting a good turn out of locals and visitors.

Last week's exceptionally high tides, combined with large amounts of rain caused the River Wye to burst its banks at Tintern on Saturday morning, flooding the bar of the Rose & Crown as well as many houses further up river from us.

The police arrived and closed the road to traffic for some time and road sweepers were out clearing up any silt that the flood waters had deposited on the main Chepstow to Monmouth road that runs past our door.

The level of the floods can clearly be seen gauged against the bathtub flower bed that lives in our riverside outdoor seating area. Luckily this is full of soil so couldn't float away.

Some YouTube footage, shot by a local has been requested by national media organisations, so Tintern floods are famous.

Naturally, none of the flooding caused any disruption in service here at the Rose & Crown where it was business as usual. However, the Tintern AFC match did get cancelled as the pitch was underwater. I did suggest that we bring on the sub, but was shouted at so kept my specialist football advice under wraps from then on.

The band Whereabouts played to a packed house at the Rose and Crown last night. Their set of rock classics went down well and we hope that they will come back and play for us again in the future. The guys are all local and make a great, tight sound with a repertoire that has something to please all age groups and tastes.

Check out our calendar of events for more entertainments coming to the Rose and Crown soon.
